At First Chiropractic, Austin chiropractor Dr. Jerrel Wottrich has worked with people of all ages--from young children to centenarians. He relies on non-invasive and drug-free techniques that promote safe, effective, and natural healing from a wide variety of conditions.
From stress-related muscle spasms to joint misalignments to "text neck" (a nod to the prolonged hunched over posture we all assume while using smartphones), our cervical spines are often the source of disruptive pain and stiffness.
Virtually all of us in Austin TX will experience back pain at least one point in our lives. It's often caused by a muscle spasm, spinal canal narrowing (called stenosis), arthritis, vertebral joint subluxation, or other problems. We're more likely to get back pain if we smoke, are overweight, are physically inactive, have physically demanding jobs, or have poor posture.
Very often, dysfunction in the arm or hand is caused by or related to a problem originating in the spine. By optimizing spinal health, our chiropractor can help treat arm pain, weakness, and numbness caused by carpal tunnel syndrome, golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, and even rotator cuff strains or tears.
Anyone who plays a sport or is physically active can become injured, from beginners to experts. Risk factors include overuse, under-training, repetitive movements, poor technique, ill-fitting equipment, and even freak slips, trips, falls, and collisions. Common sports injuries include ligament sprains, muscle strains, and plantar fasciitis.
This condition causes diffuse pain, muscle tenderness, and fatigue, and often presents with other gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms. It's thought to be linked to nervous system dysfunction that inordinately amplifies pain signals that are sent to the brain.
Your spinal bones are separated by small gel-filled discs. On occasion, the the gel inside this disc may bulge out of place, placing pressure on surrounding spinal nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues. This is known as a bulging disc. When the gel actually begins to leak out of the disc itself into the surrounding space, a person can be said to have a herniated disc (often inaccurately referred to as a "slipped disc"). Bulging discs and herniated discs don't always cause symptoms, but if they do, these may include back pain and stiffness and nerve pain (often described as numb, searing, burning, or shooting) in an arm or leg.
Muscle tension and joint misalignments in your cervical spine (especially at the first 2 bones, called the atlas and axis or C1 and C2) can cause or worsen headaches and migraines. These painful and often debilitating conditions are often accompanied by TMJ dysfunction, increased sensitivity to light or sound, mood and sleep disorders, and poor coping strategies.
Sciatica is a term used to describe what happens when your sciatic nerve (a large nerve that leaves the spinal cord in the low back area) becomes impinged, leading to symptoms such as leg pain and leg weakness. Sciatica can be caused by a number of factors, including a bulging or herniated disc, muscle spasm, joint subluxation, or tumor.
Every day, thousands of people around the country are involved in car accidents. Whether large or small, such incidents can lead to a wide range of auto accident injuries. Whiplash is one of the most common injuries sustained during an event on the road. Hallmark symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, shoulder pain, headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, and numbness and tingling in the hands.
